NYFW Shows – Day 1

Print Friendly, PDF & Email

Day 1 of New York Fashion Week (NYFW) started last Thursday on September 7th and the Indonesian Diversity Runway Show SS18 Collection was a great way to kick-start the week. It was a showcase of 6 collections by 6 different designers. Although each designer infused their Indonesian heritage into their collection, they were all unique and exceptional.

The Alurrealist Collection by Dian Pelangi was bold. I loved the styling with the hijab and the classic silhouettes mixed with bold colors and unique batik prints/patterns. I loved the layering and how patterns and textures were mixed to evoke different emotions.

The Canities Subita Collection by Barli Asmara highlights the beauty and richness of Indonesia through the exquisite and delicate details of his design. From the angelic all white collection to the delicate and romantic lace, fun ruffles and statement sleeves, this collection was dreamy.

The Makkah Madinah Collection by Vivi Zubedi built on the traditional Abaya style. The collection was rich with the bold prints, colors and the luxurious fabrics. Inspired by the understanding of one’s self-worth which brings about confidence, it creates a balance between culture and style.

The Sawunggaling Collection by Melia Wijaya stunned on the runway. It was a mix of contemporary fashion with some edge. I loved the fabric details. The embroidery, rooster and peacock details were exotic and it was majestic and regal.

The Legong Collection by Catherine Njoo was another exotic work of art. It was elegant, bold, edgy and fierce. A mix of solid colors with patterns, beads and embroideries was very unique. Another work of art that was showcased and complemented this collection was the enchanting masks and head pieces by G. Liem. Also, Doris Dorothea’s timeless and elegant handbags were great accessories for the show. These beautifully hand-crafted bags from exotic skin and luxurious materials came in all colors and shapes.

In summary, this Indonesian Diversity Fashion Show was very true to its name. Not only were they beautiful and unique, but they also reflect different styles, emotions and aspects of the Indonesian culture and modern woman and can be worn for different occasions.

I hope you enjoyed the collection. For more info on the designers or how to shop their collection,  click on their names above.
