SPEAK UP FOR BLACK LIVES FOR A BETTER AMERICA

by

Dear Friends,

The last couple of weeks has been very difficult. The state of our country and our world has been troubling but amidst the Covid19 pandemic we were reminded that we are still dealing with another pandemic that has existed for centuries which is the pandemic of racism. This form of injustice has destroyed lots of people, families and communities.

The senseless murder of George Floyd has broken the heart of not just America, but the world as many countries are standing in solidarity with us to demand justice for George Floyd and other innocent victims like Ahmaud Arbery and Breonna Taylor to name a few. But we as a community are also demanding a complete change of our system here in the United States starting with the justice system because across all institutions in this country, black people are the ones who die, suffer and lose the most and that has to change.

In times like these, it’s sometimes hard to know what to do so while we all continue to watch, read, listen and learn, we must also speak up to condemn racism and demand justice and equality for Black people because “Black Lives Matter Too” and not just some lives but “All Black Lives Matter”. It is no longer good enough to say you are not racist and excuse yourself from this fight, but you also have to be actively Anti-Racist because we need allies like you to help us make and sustain real change. Also, no matter what color, race or ethnicity you are, never stay silent or get comfortable with any type of discrimination because every life is valuable. Today I encourage you to take a stand, speak up and support by doing the following things.

  1. Listen, acknowledge the pain black people, minorities, the less privileged are sharing and show empathy instead of getting defensive even if you can’t full comprehend the injustice and trauma they have experienced.
  2. Reflect and search yourself to recognize your privilege and explore your own subconscious bias which you may have learned growing up. By uncovering them you can now consciously make changes to your fundamental beliefs that may be woven with discrimination. Just remember that nobody was born into this world with hate and prejudice in their heart. It was all learned and can also be unlearned if you’re intentionally choose to change it.
  3. Support the families of some of these victims of racism by donating to George Floyd’s Memorial Fund for Justice, Ahmaud Arbery’s Fund for Justice, or sign petitions like Justice for Breonna Taylor. You can also donate and join organizations that are working hard to fight for justice and change laws that have perpetuated systemic and organized racism like the NAACP who is at the forefront of the movement to build political power and ensure the wellbeing of communities of color, Black Lives Matter who is fighting to end state sanctioned violence, liberate Black people and end white supremacy forever, Know Your Rights Camp that’s working to advance the liberation and wellbeing of Black and Brown communities.
  4. Actively advocate by speaking out and use your position, platform, privilege to amplify black voices, black stories and black experiences. E.g. Join a peaceful protest with one of the above organizations, have a conversation with your family, your friends, your social media followers, work to change the policies at your work place or company etc.

I’ll end this with one of my favorite quotes from Martin Luther King Jr.

“Injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere. We are caught in an inescapable network of mutuality, tied in a single garment of destiny. Whatever affects one directly, affects all indirectly.”

and one of my favorite Bible Verses about injustice.

Proverbs 31:8-9 “Speak up for those who cannot speak for themselves, for the rights of all who are destitute. Speak up and judge fairly; defend the rights of the poor and needy.”

Have a safe and blessed day.

Xoxo
